Learning outcomes: The aim of the course is to introduce the issues of design and technical maintenance of railway lines and railway stations. There will be presented the current requirements and solutions for the protection of the environment during upgrading of rail lines. The standards and technical specifications related to the design, building and maintenance of rail infrastructure will be discussed. The student after completing the course understands the meaning of the concept of 'interoperability' in the European rail system, knows European technical standards for high speed railway and the technical specifications for interoperability.

Competences: After completing the course, the student should be able to design railway lines and stations and perform activities related to the operation and maintenance of the railway infrastructure.

Prerequisites: soil mechanics, building materials, CAD and FEM.

Course content: Main terminology and definitions of rail transport. Classification of railway lines. High speed trains in Europe and the world. Railways in Poland and future perspective. Design of line railway – railway geometry on the plan and longitudinal profile of the railway track and its cross section elements. Construction of embankments and cross cuts. Structure gauge and rolling stock. Drainage works for railways considering side and slope ditches, drainage, soak ways, drainage pipes and separators. Pavement and subgrade diagnostics, maintenance, repairs and upgrading. Designing of small stations. The maintenance of the railway in winter conditions. International agreements AGC and AGTC.
