Learning outcomes: The student after completion of the course should be able to identify and carry out the basic valuation of the post-industrial complexes. He should efficiently search for information and properly apply them. Know, what methods can assess the role and status of the object in the history of the given industry branche and in the landscape. He should be able to make an analysis of cultural and landscape values of the complex and to prepare a conceptual design for the protection, exposure, sharing, and possible adaptation to new functions.

Competences:

Prerequisites: The possibility of outdoor activities is envisaged: activities in the area of Wrocław and a one day trip to the chosen representative industrial center (e.g.: Łódź, Upper Silesian Industrial Region) – recognition and valuation of selected post- industrial complexes and the forms and extent of protection and use.

Course content:  Introduction to subject issues.  Post- industrial objects as a cultural heritage and an element of the region tradition.  Protection forms and the scope of use of the post-industrial objects. Terrain /post-industrial object as a tourist product.  Mills of various forms of propulsion – objects in the landscape. Needs and opportunities for adaptation. Care of the place tradition in accordance with the continuity of development.  Distilleries and breweries – components of the rural landscape and urban spaces. Revitalization as a form of recovery of urban spaces.  The textile industry in the urban landscape. Textile manufacture as a city-forming element.  Revitalized complexes of textile industry – new quality in the urban space.  City gas works - the history and contemporary forms of use of the traditional gas works.  Mining and metallurgy – problems of conservation, exhibition and a new use of degraded areas.  Historical workers housing in the urban landscape.
