Learning outcomes: Knowledge: The student has extensive knowledge of peatland ecosystems; knows the types of peatlands and their creation; knows the vegetation typical for peatlands; knows the role of peatlands in nature; is aware of the dangers peatlands face knows the economical significance of peatlands; knows active and passive protection forms understands human influence on the peatlands knows methods of obtaining information regarding the protection of living elements of ecosystems. Skills: The student is able to use proper research methods in determining the conditions of Polish peatlands is able to recognize peatlands types and decide about their protection is able to gather and interpret information is able to describe the vegetation and evaluate the level of anthropopressure.

Competences: Competences: The student understands the necessity of working in teams, especially interdisciplinary ones; knowing the vegetation leads the student to be responsible for environment and to be aware of environmental changeability the student is aware of the need to continuously learn and expand the knowledge of peatlands protection follows the principles of respect for copyright and intellectual property protection.

Prerequisites: Botany; Soil Sciences

Course content: The definition of peat and peatlands. Types of peatlands in other climate zones. Peatland formation conditions. The vegetation and ecology of high, low and transition peatlands. Mountain peatlands and their characteristics. Peatland phytosociology. Hydrogenic soils. Palynology and stratigraphy. Agricultural and non-agricultural usage of peat and peatlands. Protection and restoration of peatlands. Peatbog archeology.
