Course details
Course code: BIS10023o14
Semester: 2014/2015 summer
Name: Testing Statistical Hypotheses
Major: Bioinformatics
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 3
ECTS points: 4
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 15 / 30 / 0
Lecturer: dr hab. Krzysztof Topolski
Language of instruction: Polish
The course exclusively in Polish, with a possibility of support in English

Learning outcomes: During the course students learn theoretical and practical aspects of testing of statistical hypotheses. The emphasis is put on teaching the statistical methods used when analysing data coming from genetics.

Competences: After completing the course student can test hypotheses concerning the statistical distribution describing data. The students will be able to choose correctly the most suitable methods of testing and evaluate its accuracy. Knowing the basic methods of statistical hypotheses testing allows the students to use statistics software and understand the scientific papers devoted to statistical analysis of genetic data.

Prerequisites: Mathematics I , mathematics II, introduction to statistics, statistical analysis software.

Course content: During the course the methods of parametric and nonparametric methods of hypotheses testing will be introduced. The lectures and classes will focus on describing the basic methods of construction of statistical tests. The basic characteristics and properties of statistical test such as type I and II errors, two-side and one side hypotheses, power function, p-value, rejection region, significance level will be discussed. The basic classical parametric and nonparametric test will be introduced and discussed. All indicated concepts and methods will be illustrated with the usage of data concerning mendelian genetics, population genetics, molecular genetics and genomics.
