Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 – Has the knowledge about biology of animal (BH2_W01; R2A_W01). W2 – Has the knowledge allowing to interpret the natural phenomena and processes in research work and practical activities. Knows the research methodology obligatory in natural sciences. Formulates research hypotheses and solves basic scientific problems (BH2_W04; R2A_W03). W3 –Describes the methods of mammals, birds and fish reproduction control. Has the knowledge in the field of embryos transfer, in vitro fertilization, control and induction of reproduction cycles, obtaining, maturation and culturing of oocytes, aided reproduction. Knows the basis of embryonic engineering (BH2_W10; R2A_W05). Skills: Student: U1 – Assesses animals reproduction capacity. Controls the reproduction of animals and uses reproduction biotechnology (cryopreservation, sex control). Uses techniques of aided birds reproduction in creation of genetic reserves of birds ex situ in vitro and in declining species protection. Conducts semen collection, spermatozoa assessment, and knows methods of females insemination in various mammal species. Is able to use the in vitro methods of embryos obtaining. Knows females artificial insemination methods (BH2_U08; R2A_U06 ).

Competences: Student: K1 – Demonstrates creativity and is able to determine priorities in task realization taking into account team work (BH2_K01; R2A_K01). K2– Obeys the rules of occupational health and safety in biological laboratories, demonstrating responsibility for an assessment of dangers resulting from research techniques used. Demonstrates the care of creation of safe work conditions (BH2_K06; R2A_K06).

Prerequisites: anatomy, biochemistry, zoology, animal physiology, biology of animal growth and reproduction

Course content: biological basis of the controlling of the reproduction of mammals, birds and fish, artificial insemination (collecting, analysis and treatment of semen and its introduction to the reproduction tract of a female), transfer of embryos (selection of donors and recipients, rinsing out of embryos, assessment, storage and introduction to the reproductive tract of recipients), extracorporal fertilization, controlling and development of reproduction cycles, controlling of the offspring sex on the level of gametes and embryos, controlling of fish sex, maturation and culture of oocytes, supported fertilization, extracorporal maturation of embryos, embryonic engineering.
