Learning outcomes: Knowledge: The students know the principles of soil sampling for different purposes and the methods how to prepare soil samples for analysis. They are acquainted with the basic safety standards in the laboratory. They characterize the most important analyses performed in the field of soil science. They are aware of the crucial causes of errors in environmental analysis and properly choose the methods to eliminate them. They know the rules for validation of analytical methods. They know theoretical basis of laboratory and instrumental methods most commonly used in the studies of soil, and identify the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of each method. Skills: Students are able to plan properly sampling of soils and other environmental materials - depending on the purpose of the study. They are qualified to plan the range of research and choose the optimal methods related to the aim of the study, the type of tested material and other conditions. They can prepare the samples for laboratory analysis, adjust the equipment and materials, prepare necessary reagents and perform soil analysis alone or with the help of technicians. They identify the major sources of error and assess uncertainty of analysis, being able to use appropriate methods to eliminate the errors.

Competences: Personal and social competences: The individuals are able to organize the work and to work in a team. They properly plan the tasks, and manage their time. They are aware of the spatial variability of soil properties and take it into account while planning the research. They apply the principles of good practice in research.

Prerequisites: Soil science, chemistry, environmental chemistry.

Course content: Methodology of field work in soil science. The range of analyses for soil cartography and monitoring of soil environment. The methods of laboratory analyses. Instrumental methods, including spectroscopy, chromatography, and electrometric methods. Quality control - validation of analytical methods. Assessment of analytical error. Accreditation of laboratories.
