Learning outcomes: Knowledge 1 The student has knowledge of basic terms of the scope of this area 2. knows the consequences of fertilization and its effect on horticultural plants and the environment, depending on the system of farming, integrated, intensive and organic;O1WO10 3. he is able to characterize differences in soils and substrates used in horticulture in terms of mineral bioavailability; O1WO1, O1WO4, O1WO9 4. He understands the issues soilless cultivation in the open and closed under covers farming and the use of fertigation to crops in protected and field conditions O1WO9 5. has a basic knowledge about the influence of forms of macro-and micronutrients on their transformation in soil, plant growth and yield quantity and quality O1WO9 6. he distinguishes effect of basic organic fertilizers on plants and the environment O1WO9 Skills 1. he knows how to use basic laboratory equipment including pH meter, EC meter, colorimeter, refractometer, photometer, mixers, scales, etc. O1U11 2. he recognizes the basic fertilizers: nitrogen phosphate, potassium, calcium, etc. and knows the rules of its the mixing O1U11 4. he diagnoses the need for liming of soils and organic substrates on the basis of the neutralization curve O1U05, O1U11 5. he can according to the methodology to determine the content of minerals in the soil by the universal methods O1U11 6. he interprets the results of basic chemical analysis of soil and the substrate samples of horticultural crops O1U05, O1U11 7. he will know how to prepare fertilizer recommendations based on the chemical analysis of samples of soil and plants in horticultural crops, O1U06, O1U11

Competences: 1. he has awareness of the consequences of influence of mineral and organic fertilization on the environment, O1K03, O1K04 2. He is aware need for further education in the new fertilizer formulations and techniques for their use O1K01 3. He is able to work individually and collectively in the laboratory, O1K05 4. He has the responsibility of entrusted equipments and safety of other staff employees team O1K05

Prerequisites: Plant physiology, soil science, biochemistry

Course content: Influence of macro and micronutrients on plant growth and the natural environment, specifics of plant growing using nutrient solution in a closed and an open system, fertilization, depending on the type of substrate, method of evaluation of nutritional requirements of plants and optimal environmental features to satisfy them through the correct calculation of dosages, the selection of the type of fertilizer and to determine the optimal timing of their application, preparation of self-searching necessary information for applying in accordance with the law on fertilizers and fertilization.
