Learning outcomes: During the course student will get knowledge on soils characteristics and phenomenons occurring in the subsoil under action of loads, types of foundations and range of theirs application, geotechnical engineering technologies. He is able to prepare a concept of structure’s foundation according to the type of the object and subsoil condition. He knows the problems of theoretical modeling and dimensioning of foundation construction.

Competences: Completion of the course is one from elements of knowledge necessary for designing and execution of building works and to get recognition of professional qualifications in the building engineering. Obtained skills are needful for work in investments and buildings’ maintaining services and in supervision or building administration, too.

Prerequisites: mechanics of structures, strength of materials, soil mechanics and foundation

Course content: Ground investigation. Types of fundaments. Shallow foundation – designing and dimensioning of foundation in relation to the subsoil condition . Structures settlements – reason and effects. Subsoil models. Deep excavations. Retaining structures. Sheet piling – designing and execution. Diaphragm walls. Elements of earth structures. Embankments. Drainage. Soil reinforcement techniques. Soil anchors. Deep foundation. Piles. Piling technologies. Foundation wells and caissons. Soils strengthening, strengthening of foundations.

Assessment methods: written exam, exercises assessment: written verification of practical knowledge + presentation of 3 projects, minimum knowledge necessary to pass – 60%
