Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 – knows the systematics and origin of arachnids [KB_W06, KB_W11, KB_ W 12, KB_W13]; W2 – describes the external and internal morphology of Arachnida [KB¬_W06]; W3 – understands the increasing complexity of arachnid structure, resulting from the sequence of evolutionary events [KB_W06]; W4 – knows the current concepts on phylogenetic relationships between the major arachnid taxa [KB_W12, KB_W13]. Skills: Student: U1 – operates the light– and stereomicroscopes; safely deals with the live and preserved material (arachnids) [KB_U06]; U2 – applies the proper technologies in acquiring and processing of data; prepares the multimedia presentations [KB_U04]; U3 – can select proper techniques, applied in studies on arachnids (material preparation and preservation, analysis of characters in LM and SEM) [KB_U12, KB_U17]; U4 – can prepare the identification keys and apply the principal regulations concerning the description of new taxa, contained in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature [KB_U04, KB_U10]; U5 – identifies arachnids (representatives of particular genera and species) using the identification keys [KB_U10]; U6 – follows the data published in international scientific sources [KB_U19].

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): Student: K1 – systematically broadens the knowledge within the field of biology [KB_K01]; K2 – is aware of the increasing complexity of animal structure, being in concordance with evolutionary process [KB_K04]; K3 – is aware of the collective responsibility for fulfilling the tasks assigned to the team [KB_K02]; K4 – is responsible for the equipment he/she was entrusted with [KB_K08].

Prerequisites: Invertebrate zoology I and II

Course content: Origin of arachnids. Morphology, anatomy and physiology of arachnids. Systematic review of orders, genera and species. Importance of arachnids. Arachnids as pets.

Assessment methods: Grade: during the semester one written tests covering the lectures and practicals - scored in points (grade points available – 16 per test); project aiming at description of the ‘new’ taxon - scored in points. Obligatory attendance in practicals. Grade level depends on the number of points earned.
