Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 – knows the backgrounds of systematics and classification of selected groups of Protista and of invertebrate animals, knows their origin, structure, biology and importance [KB_W06, KB_W11, KB_W12, KB_W13]; W2 – possesses the general knowledge of life functions of representatives of the kingdoms Protista and Animalia [KB_W07; KB_W08]; W3 – describes the external and internal morphology of animals [KB_W06]; W4 – understands the increasing complexity of animal structure, resulting from the sequence of evolutionary events [KB_W06]; W5 – knows phylogenetic relationships between the major taxa of Animalia [KB_W12, KB_W13];; W6 – knows the methods of collecting, preservation, storing and labeling of invertebrates [KB_W17]. Skills: Student: U1 – operates the light– and stereomicroscopes; safely deals with the preserved material (invertebrate animals) [KB_U06]; U2 – operates the equipment serving for collecting the invertebrate animals [KB_U06]; U3 – correctly carries out the field observations, interprets and describes their results and also forwards the conclusions using the adequate biological terminology [KB_U06]; U4 – identifies the representatives of particular classes of animals and – in case of native fauna – the representatives of orders (or lower taxonomic categories, as far as protected taxa and taxa of economic importance are concerned) [KB_U10, KB_U19]; U5 – can apply the study techniques (methods of collecting, preservation, dissection, observation and identification) used in relation to various groups of invertebrates [KB_U13].

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): Student: K1 – understands the increasing complexity of animal architecture, being in concordance with the evolutionary process [KB_K04]; K2 – is aware of the collective responsibility for fulfilling the tasks assigned to the team [KB_K02]; K3 – is responsible for the equipment he/she was entrusted with [KB_K08].

Prerequisites: Invertebrate zoology I

Course content: Characteristics of main taxa of Protostomia and of invertebrate Deuterostomia; systematic review of Metazoa, with special reference to the Polish fauna (Part 2: Animalia: Annelida, Sipuncula, Echiura, Arthropoda, Mollusca, invertebrate Deuterostomia). Preliminary identification of invertebrates in the field. Sorting and key-based identification of invertebrates under stereomicroscope.

Assessment methods: Grade component – practicals: at eight practicals – short tests scored in points (grade points available – 4 per test); during the semester three large tests (grade points available – 16 per test). Obligatory attendance in practicals. In case of absence (followed by an excuse note) – the need for passing the adequate part of material. Grade level depends on the number of points earned. Grade component – field course: obligatory attendance in the course; proper application of the study technique
