Learning outcomes: Knowledge: General vocabulary connected with everyday situations including idiomatic expressions - language fluency required on B1 Level (CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference, 2001 - European Reference Level Descriptions in Learning, Warsaw 2003). Skills: LISTENING The student follows: • opinions and facts connected with everyday situations, • films and recordings concerning current affairs and their interests, READING The student can read with understanding: • texts describing events connected with their environment, • short news on general topics, • simple instructions on handling household equipment. SPEAKING The student can: • successfully express simple messages, their opinions and feelings, • communicate while travelling, • express simple and coherent opinions on familiar subjects of interest, • give a simple account of a short story. WRITING The student can: • write an informal letter, a note, a basic CV, fill a form and a questionnaire, • describe their experiences, ambitions and hopes giving reasons and explanations for their choices, • describe past and future events and activities in their environment and elsewhere, • write a short dissertation, a summary and report.

Competences: The student can integrate with an international community using a given language.

Prerequisites: Matura/A Level examination (Basic). The student can choose a language course in English, French, Spanish, German or Russian after writing a placement test.

Course content: Emphasis on listening comprehension, speaking, reading, writing and listening to recordings (from the student’s book, radio and television) related to topics such as school, free time, home, current affairs and professional interests. Vocabulary connected with everyday situations, describing events, expressing emotions, feelings, ambitions and hopes. Reviewing films. Writing short dissertations, formal and informal letters, CVs. Providing elements of professional language and authentic texts.

Recommended literature: Own materials of the lecturer. Literature depends on the chosen foreign language. A course book; internet materials, audiovisual aids, etc.

Assessment methods: Crediting the course based on attendance and active participation in the classes, evaluated homework, quizzes and presentations. The final examination checking reading comprehension, language structures and vocabulary.
