Learning outcomes: Student after completing the course acquires knowledge on technical soil classification according to their engineering properties. Student becomes knowledgeable about water, temperature and tension influence on soil mechanical properties; compactibility, shear strength and compressibility of soil and parameters that determine their influence on variability of mentioned properties. Essentials of theory of strength. Soil strength parameters and mechanical properties due to stress state and deformation characteristics in soil. Groundwater flow systems. Expansion, shrinkage and frost heaving mechanism. Soil stress distribution. Lateral earth pressure. Slope stability analysis. Geotechnical testing of soil. During the course student gains knowledge of: soil classification and testing; soil consolidation and preconsolidation phenomena, stress distribution and soil displacement under concentrated load, lateral earth pressure due to geotechnical parameters, slope stability and stabilization methods. Student acquires skill in soil laboratory testing and became acknowledgeable about physical and mechanical soil properties due to total and effective stress state; soil classification as frost-heaving/swelling.

Competences: Student shows understanding for importance of geotechnical testing and soil properties variation in terms of safety use as building materials. Student is aware of his responsibility for the safety of construction according to appropriate soil parameters determination.

Prerequisites: Physics, theoretical mechanics, strength of materials, hydraulics, geology.

Course content: Course content Essentials cohesive and non-cohesive soil parameters, grain-size distribution, classification due to soil texture and structure. Expansion, frost-heaving and shrinkage. Soil compactibility and methods of soil compaction. Water infiltration. Strength hypothesis. Shear strength and compressibility in terms of stress state dependence. Load effects on soil deformation. Total and effective stresses. Lateral earth pressure. Cohesive and non-cohesive soil slope stabilization.
