Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 –describes morphological and anatomical structure of cyanobacteria, algae, lichens, liverworts and mosses [KB_W06]; W2 –explains relationships between structure and function of algae, lichens and bryophytes [KB_W07];. W3 – knows generative and vegetative propagation of algae, lichens and bryophytes[KB_W08]; W4 – identifies taxa [KB_W12];. W5 – knows methods of collecting, preserving and staining specimens of lichens, bryophytes and algae [KB_W17]; Skills: Student: U1 - identifies specimen’s affinity to domain, phyllum, genera and species using morphological descriptions and key to species identification [KB_U10];. U2 - identifies the natural environment threats. She/he explains interactions between particular compounds of ecosystem and their relationships with climate [KB_U11]; U3 – chooses and applies proper techniques of biological specimens preparation [KB_U12]; U4 - learns himself following the tutors instructions [KB_U14].

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): K1 – is aware of necessary of permanent updating of taxonomical knowledge [KB_K01]; K2 – is sensitive for the beauty of nature. He is aware of the importance of biodiversity and actively promotes its conservation. Student understands the need of protection of the algae, lichens and bryophytes as important components of terrestrial ecosystems [KB_K04]; K3 – cares of collections of biological specimens and equipment [KB_K08].

Prerequisites: plant morphology, plant systematics

Course content: Morphological, taxonomical and ecological diversity of cyanobacteria and algae. Lichens biology. Threats and low protection of lichen species. Morphological specificity of mosses and liverworts. Bryophyte species occurring in forests and peatlands. Rules and practice in microscopic preparations and taxa identification with the help of tutors-specialists in taxonomy of these groups of cryptogams (phycologist, lichenologist, bryologist).

Assessment methods: Assessment of practicals: systematically after each class a competence in making preparations and taxa identification is confirmed. Written test of knowledge is to pass after ending a brief course of each group of cryptogams. Presence during practicals is obligatory; only one absence is permissible. In a case of justified absence students are obliged to credit that part of knowledge and skills. Final credit on a base of average mark. Assessment of lectures: three times (after ending a course of each group of cryptogams) a written test. Each test should be passed. If student failes he can repeated the test during examination session.
