Prerequisites: general and organic chemistry, biophysics

Course content: Chemical structure of the basic compounds of animal organism, selected topics of enzymology, basic metabolic pathways (mitochondrial respiratory chain and oxidative phosphorylation, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, metabolism of aminoacids, porphyrins and nucleotides) and their regulatory mechanisms.

Assessment methods: Assessment of laboratory class: Assessment used the “point system”. The tests from lectures: four tests per semester (three tests as a multiple choice tests, one written), rated from 0 to 7 points. Four checking tests (before each cycle of laboratory classes) from the material discussed during the lab seminar, rated as 1 point. Nine laboratory classes passed on the basis of the individual results made by the student – rated as 1 point and 1 laboratory class of the basic biochemical calculations – rated as 1 point. In total, the student may obtain a maximum of 42 points per semester. To pass, the minimum required number of points including laboratory classes and tests is 18 points. The final evaluation of the assessment of laboratory classes depends on the number of points obtained by the student. The presence of students during laboratory classes is mandatory. Assessment of the course: Students are obliged to write the written exam answering from 6 to 10 questions that cover all the material from the lectures. The exam takes 90 minutes. In the case of a negative assessment the student will try again to pass the exam in the same way as before. If the student fails this time (as the second term), he/she has a right to pass it in the form of oral examination.
