Learning outcomes: The student after ending the course knows basic genetic processes occurring in the cell, organism and population, knows modern methods used in genetics and plant breeding. The participant can explain a meaning of biological progress in horticultural production. The student can define the purpose and principles of plant breeding and knows the basic breeding programs used in vegetable, fruit and ornamental species. The participant can explain a meaning of resistance breeding, as a method of environmental protection, knows the biotechnological methods. The person is able to explain some benefits and risks of plants’ transformation. The participant knows regulations related to the registration of varieties and seed marketing.

Competences: Ending the subject gives the student possibility of work finding in the broad area of horticultural and agricultural production. The knowledge of dependence between variety types and the possibility of their reproduction, basic regulation regarding the ownership of variety and reproduction of seed material, gives the student possibility to work and further development in plant breeding, seed companies, biotechnological laboratories or seed inspection. The student is able to find the occupation in stations examining the varieties or agricultural institutes.

Prerequisites: Botany, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Fitopatology
