Learning outcomes: The student knows the contemporary goals and techniques of obtaining and maintaining the cells alive in culture in vitro, both of plant or animal cells.

Competences: Establishment and maintenance of the surviving cells in tissue culture. It is able to resolve the processes related to proliferation, differentiation and death of aging cells in vitro.

Course content: Cytology, the organization of DNA, cell cycle and its regulation. Methods for in vitro culture, meristematic culture, callus culture, somatic embryogenesis, organogenesis. Micropropagation of plants. Preparation and use of hybrids and their significance. Release of plants from viruses, the use of somatic embryos in the creation of artificial seeds. Cell suspensions and their use in bioreactors. Obtaining haploid plants and doubled haploid lines. Transformation in plants, gene isolation, gene structure, binary vector system, the introduction of the gene structure of plant cell-method: Vector, direct. Regeneration, and identification of transgenic plants. Resistance to stress, resistance to herbicides, pathogens, pests, modified traits-the value of food, industrial uses, in medicine. Stem cells in various stages of development, their sources, biology and application in biology and medicine. Breeding of gametes and embryos. In vitro fertilization. Breeding of embryos to the blastocyst stage. The use of embryonic stem cells in biology and medicine. Cultures of cells and tissues as a source of transplants. Adaptive cell transfer. Auto-grafts, allo-and xenogeneic. Transplantation immunology. Established in vitro tumor cell lines. The differences between normal and tumor cell. Methods of isolation, preparation and cultivation of tumor cells. Methods used in studies using tumor cell lines. Tests proliferation in vivo. Testing adhesion and migration. Evaluation of metastatic potential. Use of tumor lines in studies of new anticancer therapy.
