Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Students will develop a basic understanding of nature conservation in forest ecosystems. They will become aware of the threats to the forest ecosystems and methods for counteracting them. By attending lectures, the students will have an opportunity to review legal regulations pertaining to forest protection, they will learn how to describe and characterize forest vegetation with particular emphasis on habitat features. Students will explore practical methods of nature conservation employed by the State Forests units. Skills: Student will be capable of identifying and characterizing: a) forest species, b) forest types. They will gain knowledge about the main threats to the forest ecosystems and understand how to counteract them. During the classes, the students will draw up a forest management and conservation plan.

Competences: Student will understand the need to protect the forest ecosystems. The course participants will be able to demonstrate how to reconcile the traditional forest management with non-productive functions of forests and nature conservation on the regional scale.

Course content: During lectures, the students will be acquainted with basic issues concerning the conservation of forests and green areas: I. legal regulations related to the forest protection; II. approaches used to describe and characterize forest vegetation with particular emphasis on its habitat; III. threats to the forests ecosystems and methods for preventing them. During classes, the students will draw up a forest management and conservation plan.
