Learning outcomes: On completion of this course students: Knowledge: 1) Define the basic concepts of the theory and practice of competition policy in the European Union (E1A_W03; E1A_W06); 2) Know the economic principles and regulations of law related to the functioning of enterprises in the context of EU competition policy implemented in Member States (E1A_W10; E1A_W15; E1A_W18); Skills: 3) Explain possible types of activities that affect the principles of EU competition law and are subject to punishment (E1A_U01); 4) Discuss the role and responsibility of public administration bodies established to control and enforcement of competition law at European and national level (E1A_U10; E1A_U11); 5) Judge the European integration processes and phenomena connected with currently conducted competition policy in the EU Member States (E1A_U05; E1A_U10; E1A_U11).

Competences: Personal and social competences: 6) Students are prepared to work in enterprises and public authorities responsible for provision of services of general economic interest (E1A_K03; E1A_K04; E1A_K05); 7) Can cooperate with national and EU institutions to conduct research on competition law and policy (E1A_K03; E1A_K04; E1A_K05; E1A_K09).

Prerequisites: Knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics and basics of law.

Course content: An introduction to competition law and policy. The prohibition of practices restricting competition. Abuse of a dominant position. Control of mergers between undertakings. State trading monopolies and public enterprises in the context of competition policy rules. State aid and sectoral regulations in the EU competition policy.

Assessment methods: Knowledge: Evaluation of the written test and research project on a given topic. Skills: Skills’ evaluation to solve practical and theoretical issues raised in classes. Personal and social competences: Evaluation of students’ speeches at lectures and classes.
