Learning outcomes: Knowledge:
General and professional vocabulary including idiomatic expressions - language fluency required on C1/C2 Level (CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference, 2001 - European Reference Level Descriptions in Learning, Warsaw 2003).

Skills:

LISTENING

The student should be able to follow:
• long talks on abstract and complex topics including subjects unrelated to the field of study (though sometimes they may need further explanation of details),
• wide range of idiomatic and colloquial expressions,
• live or recorded talks on familiar and unfamiliar topics related to personal, social, academic and professional life,
• majority of lectures, discussions and debates concerning the field of study.

READING

The student should be able to read with understanding:
• long and complex texts irrespective of their specialization provided they have the opportunity to reread the most difficult fragment,
• any correspondence occasionally using the dictionary,
• nuances in texts such as the author’s point of view as well as explicit and implicit opinions.

SPEAKING

The student should be able to:
• fluently and efficiently use the language in social context expressing their emotions, making allusions, etc.
• conduct group discussions and complicated conversations on abstract, complex and topics without problems,
• follow lively conversations among native speakers,
• express their opinions in a precise way, present their advanced arguments and react to others’ opinions.

WRITING

The student should be able to:
• express their point of view clearly, openly and accurately,
• write formal and informal texts efficiently whereas publications might require corrections,
• summarize long, complex texts, make detailed notes after having listened to a lecture related to their interests,
• choose proper expressions out of a wide lexical range to communicate effectively and clearly,
• use grammar effectively so that mistakes are rare and hard to notice.


Competences: The student should be able to integrate with an international community using a given language.

Prerequisites: Matura/A Level examination (Extended). Completed B2 level. The student can choose a language course in English, French, Spanish, German or Russian.

Course content: Emphasis on listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing. Discussing topics related to the student’s field of study and interests. Paraphrasing sentences, using idiomatic expressions. Writing summaries, essays and reports. Making presentations. Applying for a job.

Assessment methods: Crediting the course based on attendance and active participation in the classes, evaluated homework, quizzes and presentations. The final examination comprising reading comprehension, language structures and vocabulary.
