Lecturer: dr inż. Magdalena Zatoń-Dobrowolska
Language of instruction: Polish / English
The course taught in English if the group has ≥6 students. The course taught in Polish with a possibility of support in English if the group has <6 students

Learning outcomes: Knowledge; student has knowledge of the factors and mechanisms affecting the genetic structure of breeding animals populations; student describes indicators of populations at a genetic level; student determines the kinds of changes occurring in the population, their causes and consequences; student understands the mechanisms affecting the genetic structure of populations, student knows how can influenced it by various factors. Skills: student : analyze and interpret the factors and mechanisms that determine the genetic structure of breeding animals populations; estimate and analyzepopulation structure in terms of one gene and many genes;knows how to specify the types and directions of change in the population; can interpret their causes and analyze the consequences that they bring to the population and husbandry.

Competences: Personal and social competences [attitudes and behaviours]: student: is aware of the responsibility for shaping the population and its evolutions; understand the need to predict consequences of actions taken in breeding.

Prerequisites: biology, genetics

Course content: The course includes following questions: genetic equilibrium of a population; frequencies of alleles and genotypes for one gene and many genes; factors affecting frequencies of genes and genotypes in a population; theory of small populations; value and variability of quantitative trait; source of the phenotypic variances; genetic parameters characterizing a population; estimation of the genetic value; genetic trend in a population and genetic distances between populations.
