Learning outcomes: Knowledge Student: K1 - knows the currently used methods of cell culture, trends and perspectives in tissue engineering related to regeneration of tissues and organs [KB2_W01; KB2_W05_BT]. Skills Student: S1 – is able to assess the morphology of stem cells and growth pattern of in vitro culture using an inverted light microscopy [KB2_U01_BT; KB2_U07_BT]; S2 – is able to calculate the number of cells using a Bruker chamber [KB2_U02]; S3 – is able to analyze the data obtained in the cytotoxic test [KB2_U04]; S4 – is able to plan an experiment concerning biomaterials modification and/or modifications of culture conditions for stem cells propagated on various biomaterials [KB2_U01].

Competences: Personal and social competenes (attitudes and behaviours) Student: C1 – is responsible for cell cultures and works in group[KB2_K02; KB2_K05]; C2 – applies the principles of aseptic and safe work[KB2_K07].

Prerequisites: histology and cell biology

Course content: The course contents will discuss current approaches and perspectives of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The leading subject will be stem cells and tissue regeneration. The emphasized topics will concern regeneration of bone, cartilage and nervous system. The course will present modern biomaterials, scaffolds and matrices used in cell culture and tissue engineering. Moreover the course will provide information about methods used for assessment of biomaterials biocompatibility.
