Learning outcomes: Knowledge: student distinguishes and selects the appropriate information technology necessary for obtaining and processing information; student identifies and selects the most useful methods in biological research in the field of bioinformatics;student knows the history of biological science and the most important methods in bioinformatics. Skills: student performs mathematical calculations; applies simple statistical methods to describe the biological phenomena and to analyse data; student applies appropriate information technologies for the statistical and graphical data description as well as in obtaining and processing information; creates multimedia presentations; student designs and executes simple research tasks in the field of bioinformatics under the guidance of a tutor; is able to summarise results, process and analyze data using information technology; student correctly interprets and discusses the results of bioinformatics research and formulates appropriate conclusions using scientific terminology appropriate for the field of biology, uses selected bioinformatics softwareł student learns independently in a targeted manner; student uses all available sources of information, including electronic, to learn, prepare presentations, and to plan research activities; student knows how to prepare presentations on issues related to the studied subject.

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): student shows interest in a systematic updating of knowledge in the field of bioinformatics, understands the need to acquire knowledge throughout life; student is responsible for the hardware which is used during the computer labs.

Prerequisites: Molecular Biology

Course content: content, structure and practical skills of using the major bioinformatics databases, DNA and amino acid sequence alignment, phylogenetic analysis, SNPs, haplotypes, SNP microarrays, expression microarrays

Assessment methods: Assessment of tutorials: Based on the average grade calculated from the project, written tests and presentations. The final grade can be enhanced by student’s active participation in tutorials. The presence at tutorials is compulsory. The student may have one unauthorized absence. Completion of the course: students with a valid credit for a tutorial undergo a written or oral exam (5-10 open questions) in the examination session. The written examination lasts up to 90 minutes. During the exam the student has the right to use lecture notes, but cannot communicate with other students. If the exam is not passed, a student has the right to retry it orally or in writing.

Comment: Lectures should take place in the hall with Internet access. Computer labs should take place in the room with Internet access and personal computers with the required software. Each student has individual access to a computing terminal.
