Learning outcomes: Knowledge: W1 - Knows how to interpret results of biological analyses [BI_W04]; W2 - Understands the importance of interdisciplinary knowledge of mathematics, physics, biophysics, chemistry, biochemistry necessary for an understanding of basic phenomena and natural processes [BI_W09]; W3 - Has knowledge of the fundamental problems inherent in bioinformatics [BI_W10]; W4 - Has knowledge of the basic concepts and terminology within the scope of mathematics and computer science [BI_W11]; W5 - Knows basic methods of statistical analysis used in the description of biological problems [BI_W13]; W6 - Has the knowledge allowing for the application of elementary mathematical and computer science tools to describe and interpret biological phenomena and processes [BI_W14]; W7 - Has the knowledge of elementary research techniques and tools used in mathematics, statistics, biology to conduct experiments and analysis of biological data [BI_W15]. Skills: U1 - Applies basic techniques of computer science: can work in various operating systems, knows how to use various software applications, can create simple computer programs and design biological databases [BI_U01]; U2 - Applies basic techniques and research tools in the field of mathematical statistics: knows how to formulate a correct hypothesis, knows how to select the appropriate statistical test, knows how to interpret test results, knows how to model biological data [BI_U03]; U3 - Understands the literature on computer science in Polish [BI_U04]; U4 - Uses available information sources, including electronic sources [BI_U05]; U5 - Applies basic mathematical and computer methods to describe and interpret the results obtained in the analysis of biological data [BI_U07]; U6 - Demonstrates the ability of correct inference based on data from various sources of natural sciences and mathematics [BI_U10]; U7 – Applies mathematical language to describe biological phenomena [BI_U12]; U8 - Describes biological processes by using bioinformatics tools [BI_U13].

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviours): K1 – Is able to work in a group assuming different roles [BI_K03].

Prerequisites:

Course content: The application of statistical packages, preparing figures, real data editing, the interpretation of results of the statistical data analysis, the interpretation of figures, elements of handling large data sets.

Assessment methods: Assessment of tutorials: Based on the average grade calculated from the project, written tests and presentations. The final grade can be enhanced by student’s active participation in tutorials. The presence at tutorials is compulsory. The student may have one unauthorized absence. Completion of the course: students with a valid credit for a tutorial undergo a practical exam using a computer (4-8 open questions) in the examination session.
