Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 18 / 9 / 0
Lecturer: dr inż. Dorota Olearczyk
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student knows the scientific methods applied in hydraulics of open channel. Can describe a process of sediment transport in river beds and use it to determine the stable conditions of water flow and sediment movement in open channels. Knows methods for determining the parameters of arcs, longitudinal slopes and parameters of riverbed cross-section. Knows principles of elaboration the projects of technical river training and environmentally friendly solutions. Skills: Can elaborate the project of riverbed training. Can choose parameters of river cross-section and longitudinal slope which provide the required capacity of riverbed and its stability, taking into account the sediment transport. Can design the technical and biological protection of mountain and lowland riverbeds and elaborate a project of debris dam.

Competences: Understand the role of watercourses in the natural environment. Is aware of the responsibility for the natural environment and the rational management of river valleys. Is prepared to take actions to increase water retention and also to take activities for flood protection and elimination of sudden threats within the river valleys.

Prerequisites: meteorology, hydrology, fluid mechanics in open channel.

Course content: Objectives and tasks of river training. Hydrological, hydraulic and morphological characteristics of rivers. River’s sediment. Grain-size distribution. Suspended and bed load transport. Stability of riverbeds, methods of assessing the stability conditions. Designing a riverbed cross-section. Designing a watercourse route. Significant materials and construction elements. Technical and biotechnical methods of bottom and banks stabilization. Structures and systems of river regulation. Mountain stream regulation using water steps and debris dam. Embankments and dyke structures. Standard requirements and methods of design.
