Course details
Course code: BHN10188o15
Semester: 2015/2016 summer
Name: Organic Chemistry with Elements of Inorganic Chemistry
Major: Animal Science
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 2
ECTS points: 6
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 9 / 18 / 0
Lecturer: dr Małgorzata Grabarczyk
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: After completing the course the student can assign inorganic compounds to specific groups (acids, bases, salts, strong and weak electrolytes). During the course the student acquires theoretical knowledge and practical skills useful in solving problems related to expressing concentrations of solutions, evaluation of environmental pH, buffering, neutralization processes. The student knows the structure of organic compounds, is knowledgeable about the characteristics of the main groups of natural products - fats, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates. Student is capable of unaided qualitative determination of inorganic and organic and inorganic compounds quantified (titration analysis). Student is able to perform simple experiments using the instructions in the manual.

Competences: Student follows instructions, adheres to the safety rules in the laboratory. Able to work in a group.

Prerequisites: Fundamentals of chemistry

Course content: Use of the periodic table. Dissociation of acids, bases and salts. Hydrolysis of the salt. Redox reactions. Amphoteric hydroxides - preparation and properties. Molar concentrations and rates, convert concentrations. Calculating the pH of weak and strong acids, bases and buffer solutions. Discussion of the various groups of organic compounds: unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, fats, amino acids, sugars.
