Learning outcomes: Knowledge: knows the principles of aseptic work; knows the classification of cell and tissue cultures; knows methods of mesenchymal stem cells isolation and identyfication; has knowledge how to design biomaterials; is aware how to use techniques of cell and tissue culture in regenerative medicine. Skills: Student is able to conduct cell passage and maintains cell culture; is able to freeze cells and to defrost cells’ pellets; is able to determine cells’ morphology and cultures’ condition using inverted light microscope; is able to plan an experiment in order to determine biomaterials’ biocompatibility; is able to propose the way of biomaterials’ modification for different branches of regenerative medicine.

Competences: Student is responsible for his own cells’ cultures; is responsible for tasks, that are realized in groups during the tutorial; is conscious of importance of working in compliance with safety and health rules and keeps rudiments of aseptic working.

Prerequisites: Histology and cell biology

Course content: Cell culture. Tissue culture. Synthesis of alginate materials. Design of fibrin implants. Suspension of stem cells in fibrin. Suspension of stem cells onto modified metallic biomaterials. Aseptic working in a laminar flow hood. Centrifuge operation. Inverted microscope operation. Cytotoxicity assays (XTT or MTT).
