Learning outcomes: Knowledge: A student has knowledge connected with achievements in varieties improvements by using methods in the field of biotechnology. He can explain the process of forming new species by combining different genomes and polyploidization based on the example of wheat evolution. Understands the benefits of the use of molecular markers to mass selection (MAS) to make easier and facilitate the identification of desirable genotypes. Understands the need for the use of in vitro culture, obtaining haploids and doubled haploid lines in streamlining the process of breeding. A student has an extended knowledge in intellectual property protection and can make use of opportunities to increase the value of crops produce by getting GM. A student understands the necessity to protect biodiversity and agro-ecosystems. Skills: Student is able to assess the suitability of methods used in agrobiotechnology. A student has the ability to demonstrate the methods of obtaining genetically modified crops and using in agricultural practice. He is able to suggest ways to identify them.

Competences: The student is aware of the use of the methods in the field of plant biotechnology and understands the changes that occur at different stages of plant development in the process of improvement. Working in the laboratory a students is fully responsible for the equipment entrusted to him. Understands and respects the safety rules and work hygiene. He is aware of the need for self-education and further improvement in terms of expanding knowledge. A student learns skills to improve methods of shortening the period of receiving plant varieties.

Prerequisites: Botany, genetics and plant breeding, biochemistry.

Course content: As part of the course students will be acquainted with the achievements in the field of plant biotechnology, taking specific note of the benefits of using these methods in plant breeding. Students will learn different techniques used in vitro culture and capabilities to accelerate and simplify the selection, as well as the benefits of the use of molecular markers in agricultural and horticultural practice. Students know how to receive and use genetically modified plants.

Assessment methods: Active participation in classes and completion of exercise. Positive course credit – written test. Written exam. Knowledge to pass 60%.
