Learning outcomes: Knowledge Student knows structure, nomenclature and classification of organic compounds, characterizes their chemical and spectroscopic properties, can describe and explain the course of chemical reactions, knows the basis of 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy Skills: Student assembles and works on the apparatus for basic physical and chemical operations useful in the laboratory of organic chemistry, measures the basic physicochemical data of organic compounds, gives correct interpretation of observed effects of simple chemical reactions, synthesizes simple organic preparations, identifies the compounds on the basis of their spectroscopic data

Competences: Student is aware of hazards during work in laboratory of organic synthesis, works safely for himself and other laboratory workers, cooperates with other members of a student team, cares about cleanliness in the laboratory, works honestly

Prerequisites: General and Inorganic Chemistry.

Course content: Nomenclature, properties and reactions of aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic compounds containing the common functional groups. Stereochemistry and the electronic structures of these molecules. Mechanisms of reactions of organic compounds. Basic chemistry of carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, nucleotides. The application of spectroscopic methods to establishing the structure of organic compounds.
