Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student - W1 – is able to list and characterize physical, chemical and biological properties of cows’ milk and has the knowledge of OSH in laboratory; W2 – knows the basis of raw milk analytics on particular production stages and in milk assessment laboratories; W3 – has detailed knowledge concerning the process of formation and methods of milk obtaining and factors limiting cows’ milk yield; W4 – knows law requirements concerning conditions of milk obtaining, characterizes modern technologies of milk production, has the knowledge of modern techniques used in cattle herd management; W5 – knows the daily schedule in a cowshed, rules of animal herd monitoring in terms of their functioning on dairy cattle farm. Skills: Student - U1 – is able to use laboratory equipment for raw milk examination and analyses in efficient and safe manner; U2 – has an ability of cows’ milking, assessment of quality and chemical composition of milk and its adulterations detection, and also interpretation of obtained results; U3 – has an ability of self-dependent planning of production technology and herd management, and communication with various entities like PFHBiPM, ARR, ARiMR, IW; U4 – is able to perform cattle herd inspection on a farm pointing possible threats and mistakes, effectively uses these information for modification of technologies used and for efficient animal herd management.

Competences: Student - K1 – is aware of the responsibility of extra class milk production, animal welfare and environmental conditions managing on cattle; K2 – understands significance of OSH rules obeying in cattle service.

Prerequisites: Cattle breeding and husbandry

Course content: Raw material base for milk production, breeding, environmental and legal conditions of milk production, physicochemical and health promoting milk properties, mammary gland health status, purchase and assessment of milk quality, production technology planning, cattle herd management, reproduction and breeding work in cows’ herd, maintenance systems, buildings and premises for cattle, organization of dairy cattle fairs.

Assessment methods: Practicals completion based on an average score obtained during oral statements (verification W1, W2, W3, W4, W5, K1); reports from laboratory practicals (verification W1, W2, U1, U2); written test containing 40 questions (verification W1, W2, W3, W4, W5); practicals on the dairy cattle farm (verification U3, U4, U5, K1, K2) and preparation of the project in the range of dairy cattle breeding and husbandry (within 2 weeks) and its presentation using multimedia software (about. 15 minutes) (verification W1, W2, W3, W4, W5). Presence on the practicals is obligatory. In case of justified absence, the student is obliged to complete the suitable part of material (oral statement on 2 problem questions). The students who obtained minimum 80% of proper answers on the test will receive the certificate: “Laboratory milk evaluation and analysis”. Scores range and % of proper answers: 3 – 60%, 3+ – 70%, 4 – 80%, 4+ – 90%, 5 – 100%. Course completion: The basis for course completion is practicals completion and written test (40 questions). The test lasts 1 h. When the test is not completed in the first term, the student has the right to pass it again in the same form in additional term. Minimum scope of knowledge required for completion is 60%. Knowledge (W1, W2, W3, W4, W5) will be verified during the exam. The students who obtained minimum 80% of proper answers on the test will receive the certificate: “Evaluation of performance value of dairy and beef-dairy breeds cattle”. Scores range and % of proper answers: 3 – 60%, 3+ – 70%, 4 – 80%, 4+ – 90%, 5 – 100%. Attention: There is a possibility to obtain the certificate “Systems of dairy cows herd managing” for the participation in additional training (5 h) with the Manager of Technical Support in DeLaval company office in Wroclaw.
