Learning outcomes: Student knowledge: knows the basic types of chemical reactions, the most important organic compounds found in nature, and their biological functions; distinguishes between basic levels of biological organization and knows the most important biological processes; describes the basic metabolic pathways and selected physiological processes. Student skills: perform basic measurements of physical and chemical values; uses mathematical tools to interpret the results and evaluate their reliability; applies the principle of health and safety in the laboratory; uses basic laboratory techniques in the field of biochemistry; obtains information from literature, databases, and other sources; able to integrate and interpret the collected information; draws conclusions and formulates own opinions.

Competences: Competences: Student social competence: has awareness of the responsibility for the quality of completed tasks and work safety; takes care of laboratory equipment and devices; is able to work independently and in a team taking on various roles; is aware of the shared responsibility for the research tasks performed in the group; accepts the opinions of others and in conflict situations tends to compromise.

Prerequisites: chemistry course

Course content: Course content: The basic theoretical knowledge in biochemistry and physiology of plants and the ability to carry out basic biochemical laboratory work. Theoretical knowledge covers the main aspects of the biochemistry and physiology of plant: structure and function of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and nucleic acids; energy metabolic reactions; the structure, function, kinetics, the mechanism of action of enzymes and cofactors; regulation of enzymatic reactions; structure and function of plasma membranes; the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids; DNA replication and repair; transcription, translation; regulation of gene expression; plant-water relations; photosynthesis; respiration; mineral nutrition; the growth and movement of plants; phytohormones

Assessment methods: Assessment methods: Knowledge: evaluation of the education effects on the basis of an oral examination. Skills: evaluation the accuracy of the data and reports. Social competence: evaluation the accuracy of selection of information, respect for copyright and proper teamwork

Comment: Comment: In the laboratory, students perform exercises that combine theoretical knowledge with practice. Laboratory classes are divided into several modules. Participation in laboratory exercises is mandatory. For each module, students write a report. All modules must be approved in order to pass the course. The course is supported by on-line course based on Moodle platform.
