Learning outcomes: Knowledge: has basic knowledge regarding the nature of and problems related to sustainable development; knows the basic principles of the sustainable development concept; has knowledge regarding the basic methods and tools used in the realisation of sustainable development; knows the current legal-organisational solutions in balancing development goals; knows the principles of social participation in spatial planning and the tools used to foster this process; knows the methods of implementing the principles of sustainable development in selected sectors and problem areas; Abilities: uses selected sources to retrieve data for use in analysing the degree of development balance; can perform a basic indicator sustainable development evaluation; utilises techniques which foster the process of social participation and decision making in the field of planning; identifies actions related to sustainable development using the examples of existing spatial units; designs system solutions related to sustainable development in a selected spatial unit;

Competences: Social competence (attitudes): cooperates within a group representing the needs of a chosen social group; can reach a consensus within a group with regard to the localisation of an investment in space; makes mutual planning decisions which acknowledge the priority hierarchy of various social groups; is aware of the social and environmental consequences of the decisions made by the planning team.

Course content: Sustainable development paradigm (basic ideas and general principles) on background of contemporary global problems and processes. Agenda 21 as practical tool for sustainable development proceeding. LA 21 and regional environmental management system. Sustainable development indicators as audit tool for spatial, environmental, social-economic circumstances as well as for verification of strategic goals and actions. Ecological Footprint as spatial indicator of human environmental impact. Spatial policy and sustainable development integration within legal framework. Spatial order principles as basis for planning and programming of non-urban areas sustainable development. Integrated land and spatial management for prevention and resolving of ecological and social-economical conflicts. Logistic policy and spatial transformation of the communication system as part of development sustaining. Agri-environmental programs for sustainable development of rural areas. Spatial management as tool for agriculture greening and life quality improvement in countryside. Spatial aspects of the comprehensive water and soil resources protection. Spatial planing as tool for natural and anthropogenic catastrophes prevention. Ecological network cohesion and ecosystem resistance in spatial planning and land management. Sustainable land management for landscape conservation. Selected problems of human impact management in non-urban areas - case studies of planning practices.
