Learning outcomes: The student knows the law and the mutual interrelationship of the legal system connected with plant protection and trade of propagating material at the country level and the European Union; the student knows phytosanitary rules and the rules of liability in this area; the student has knowledge of the basic rights of economy and agricultural market; the student has a basic knowledge of genetics, plant breeding methods, molecular biology, quality of seed material and its importance in plant protection; the student has knowledge of the biodiversity of natural environment, its formation and protection against unfavorable abiotic and biotic factors. The student is able to acquire and properly interpret some information from literature and other sources connected with biotechnology; the student is able to analyze the usefulness of agro-biotechnological methods in agricultural production and its impacts on the rural environment and nature. The student is able to prepare a report and present an oral speech relating to the impact of biotechnology for agricultural production and the natural environment.

Competences: The student can work in a group and is able to change qualifications and the role of teamwork. The student is aware of changes that may occur in the environment due to the use of plant biotechnology methods. The student is responsible for the equipment entrusted to him and also understands and respects the rules of safety and hygiene of work. The student is aware of the farmer's responsibility for the environment and biodiversity of plants. The student is aware of the needs of self-directed learning and improving knowledge of methods allowing for shortening the period of implementation of new plant varieties to the cultivation.

Prerequisites: Entomology, Phytopathology, Genetics, Plant Breeding

Course content: The importance of resistance breeding in environmental and natural protection. The rules of inheritance pathogenicity in microbial and host resistance genes. Theories explaining the types of resistance. Inheritance of resistance to environmental plant stresses. Methods for bonitation in the range of the field plant sensitivity to infection and the evaluation of damage caused by various diseases, pests and environmental factors. Reasons for the loss of stability in agro-systems and changes of resistance duration in varieties in relation to some pathogens and pests. Modern methods of resistance breeding using biotechnology. The ecological importance of healthy, not infected varieties in human and animal nutrition and the risk of mycotoxin of food products derived from infected plants.
