Learning outcomes: The aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge about various kind of bioreactors, apparatus for membrane processes and tools for removing water from biological materials.
Competences: Work in the laboratory with selected experimental techniques that are applied in technical microbiology.
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge in general microbiology
Course content: Criteria of the bioreactors identity. Characteristic of different types of bioreactors including stirred, packed-bed, air-lift and photo bioreactors. Bioreactors used in Solid-State-Fermentation. Characteristic of the membrane processes including microfiltration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis. Membranes and membrane modules used in the membrane processes. Methods of the removing water from the biological materials. Ion-exchange and adsorptive chromatography.
