Learning outcomes: Knowledge: The student has knowledge on the performance of in vitro plant cultures and their applications in the "green biotechnology". He can explain the process of somatic embryogenesis. He understands the benefits from the use of in vitro plant cultures for mass multiplication of favorable crops materials, receiving pathogen-free plants, plants selection to abiotic and biotic stresses, to receive a new variation - on the way to induce mutations, conservation genetic resources of germplasm. He understands the need for the use of in vitro culture to obtain haploid and doubled haploid lines, which are necessary to speed up the breeding process. He has a broadening of knowledge in the use of these techniques to obtain GM and understands the need to protect biodiversity and agro-ecosystems. Skills: Student is able to evaluate the usefulness and choose the appropriate technique in vitro micropropagation or obtaining homozygous DH lines. He has the ability to plan and conduct the experiment, which aims to develop an efficient method of micropropagation - effective initiation of cultures, proliferation and acclimatization for in vivo conditions.

Competences: Personal and social competences: The student is aware of the use of techniques of in vitro plant cultures, and he understands the processes that occur at different stages of plant development. Student working in the lab is fully responsible for the equipment entrusted to him. He understands and respects the principles of health and safety at work, and he acquires the ability to work in a team. He is aware of the need for self-study and further improvement in terms of increasing knowledge and skills to improve methods of shortening the period for obtaining varieties of crops and their mass multiplication using in vitro techniques.

Prerequisites: Botany, Biochemistry, Genetics and plant breeding.

Course content: As part of the course practical and research use of various techniques in plant tissue culture will be presented for students. Particular attention will be put to the benefits of using these methods in plant breeding (simplify and speed selection) and mass production of healthy plant material. Students will deepen the knowledge of the possibilities for obtaining new varieties with the use of induced and spontaneous mutants, protoplast fusion, and transgenesis – using in vitro techniques. Mechanisms of somatic embryogenesis and the use of in vitro techniques for storing germplazm - in conditions of slow growth and using cryopreservation will also be presented to them.
