Learning outcomes: After completing the course students regards biotechnology as an innovative direction in industry, medicine, agriculture and environment al protection. They also acquire information about legal status of production and the use of genetically modified food , as well as economic premises of the development of food market and products based on GMO plants.Students become familiar with ecomomic and social effects of abandoning application of biotechnology, health – oriented conditioning of food containing GMO , as well as the possibilities of coexistence between transgenic, traditional and ecological types of cultivation. The course also covers such important issues as knowledge about conditions GMO cultivars can be introduced and monitoring their potential influence on the environment. Another considerable aspect students deal with is the attitude of the Europeans to genetically modified organisms.

Competences: Completion of the course allows to assess economic significance of GMO and determination of the tendencies of development regarding the use of these organisms and its economic effects on agriculture and food production. Students are also expected to make use of legal bases regulating production and introduction of GMO to the market, as well as to be aware of market challenges connected with competitiveness of genetically modified animal feed. Students should also be able to identificate and point out potential health hazards resulting from the use of food containing GMO Raw materials and the role of this food in famine reduction.

Prerequisites:

Course content: Biotechnology in industry, medicine, agriculture and environment al protection. Economic significance of genetically modified plants. GMO and competitiveness of Polish agricultural – food sector. Coexistence between GMO and other technologies of plant production. Legal system regarding production and the use of transgenic food in EU and in Poland Economic and social effects of abandoning biotechnology. Health conditioning of food containing GMO raw materials.
