Course details
Course code: BŻS10042o16
Semester: 2016/2017 winter
Name: Physiology of Plant
Major: Food Safety
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 3
ECTS points: 4
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 15 / 15 / 0
Lecturer: dr Piotr Stępień
Language of instruction: Polish / English
The course taught in English if the group has ≥6 students. The course taught in Polish with a possibility of support in English if the group has <6 students.

Learning outcomes: Knowledge: The students develop a comprehension of how essential physiological processes contribute to the plant cell and the whole plant functioning with the focus on plant responses to biotic and abiotic environmental factors. The background knowledge is gained of how plants react to fertilizers, agrochemicals and other environmental factors as a key component for the safe food production. Skills:The students are able to design and independently perform the basic laboratory experiments aiming to examine the physiological processes functioning in plant cell, and further on, to implement this expertise for estimation of the physiological state of plant under variable environmental conditions. The benefits of that extend long beyond the period of the course. The skills acquired upon the successful completion of the course equip the students with the background for further studies of plant sciences – biotechnology, agriculture, environmental protection etc. – particularly concerning the question of the food production safety.

Competences: The students demonstrate an understanding of the physiological processes functioning in plants at various levels of organization. They identify interactions occurring between biotic and abiotic environmental factors, and the plant organism. The students demonstrate a high degree of initiative and independence, organizing and conducting teamwork. They show high capacity in the process of learning and application new techniques, and as essentially, in building personal contacts with associates across the group. The students understand the importance of training and self-cultivation. They comply with health and safety regulations in the laboratory.

Prerequisites: Botany (anatomy and morphology), basic/general chemistry

Course content: Physiological processes functioning at the molecular and the whole-organism level of plants; plant responses to biotic and abiotic stress; effect of fertilizers, agrochemicals and plant growth regulators on the physiological processes in plants.
