Learning outcomes: A student knows the topics connected with damages caused by diseases and pests in ornamental plants cultivation and urban green area. Recognises systematic position and knows the bionomy of these species. Recognises pests and diseases assembled to each species of plants. Student describes damages and visual symptoms of plant tissues. Knows and understands the modifying influence of abiotic factors (temperature, moisture ect.) on development and range of potential damages. Describes reaction pest and pathogen on the changes of these factors. A student knows the biological bases of plant harmfulness. Understands urban green areas, as factor stabilizing the plant diversity within the human living space. Has the knowledge about biodiversity and shaping urban the natural environment. Knows the principles to establishing and the care over green lands. Students understand the harmfulness thresholds, as approximately value describing threats only and the necessity of adaptations those values to concrete conditions. Has the knowledge about pathogens control management with biological, chemical, mechanical and physics methods. A student has basic knowledge about elements of the garden landscaping and green lands. Understands the possibility of potential using them in practice. He knows basic legal acts the relating protections of nature and environment. Students possess the practical skill to recognize more important species damaging decorative plants and causing damages on urban greenness. The pests are recognized by morphological features and plant damage symptoms. They can assess the pest harmfulness and threats related to their range occurrence. Students can make a correct control decision based on harmfulness thresholds or aesthetic plant damage and justify correctness of this decision. They are able set dates of treatments correctly, plan and execute pest/diseases control management. Reduces the number of treatments to the necessary minimum. Students can check carried out treatment quality and collect data necessary to conduct engineer tasks.

Competences: Student is feeling responsible for the selection of crop protection chemicals applied in the public sphere of urbanised lands. Has the awareness of negative effects incorrect applying and storage of zoocides. Understands their harmfulness for the natural environment. Takes care about public safety. Understand social and environmental threats connected with excessive pesticides application in communities of “inedible” plants. Follow social benefits resulting from active application the integrated methods of ornamental plant protection. Comply with law regulations of pesticide usage in the urbanised space. Exploiting the acquired knowledge for propagating all available methods of plant protection. Student is able work individually and also in the team - taking different member roles on in the group.

Prerequisites: Botany, Biological Fundamentals of Plant Nutrition, The Law in Plant Protection, Fundamentals of Microbiology, Plant Physiology and eco-biology, General Entomology, Agrophytosociology

Course content: Recognizing diseases and pests of decorative plants. Biology of more important harmful species. The influence of abiotic and biotic factors on development and the range of potential damages. Non-chemical methods plat diseases prevention in urbanized area. The inspection health methodology of ornamentals plants, threshold of harmfulness determination, the practical evaluation of threats caused by pathogens and pests. Correct the pesticide selection, according to pest a disease identification criteria, their biology and developmental stage and occurrence. The prophylaxis in plant protection. Principle of site location and plants contiguity in parks, communication paths. Knowledge rules of law and legal regulation biocides application in the urbanized space.

Assessment methods: Knowledge: tests on lab exercises and written exam. Abilities: The observation of consequence and the cohesion of student work. Assignment evaluation. Social competences: knowledge and contents presented and declared in class work discussions, evaluation the correctness selected plant protection method in reference to urban area specificity. Discussion assessment on classes according to the scale evaluation.
