Learning outcomes: Knowledge Student knows technical soil classification and the ways of determining soil properties. Student knows the interaction of water, temperature and tension on the mechanical properties of soil. Student knows compatibility, shear strength and compressibility of soil and the factors affecting on variability of these characteristics. Student knows elements of strength theory, soil strength parameters and relationship with stress state and deformation characteristics in soil. Student knows phenomenon of groundwater flow, expansion, shrinkage and frost heaving mechanism; knows the soil stress distribution and earth pressure; knows the slope stability analysis and geotechnical research method of soil. Student is familiar with the dimensioning of direct and indirect foundations, including piles and engineering wells. Student knows ways to design with bearing capacity limit state method and can determine the displacement. Student can design the security stability of excavation, knows drainage systems, retaining walls (gravity wall, piling wall), soil anchored, strengthening the soil and foundations. Skills Student can recognize and classify technical soils, and identify physical and mechanical properties of soils on absolute and effective stress. Student can predict soil consolidation and preconsolidation phenomena. Student can define stress distribution in soil under concentrated and distributed load. Student know how define earth pressure due to geotechnical parameters. Student can research slope stability and classify soil as frost-heaving or swelling. Student can design retaining walls and stability of gravity walls, stabilize soil with modern technology, strengthening unanchored and anchored excavation.

Competences: Student shows understanding of the importance of research and the variability of soil properties as a building material and subsoil in terms of security designed and exploited buildings. The student is aware of the responsibility for the rational and safe identification of geotechnical parameters and connection with the safety objectives of the building. Student shows understanding of the economic and safe design and construction of excavation walls and geotechnical structures using secure technology

Prerequisites: physics, mechanics and strength of materials, fluid mechanics

Course content: Basic geotechnical parameters of cohesive and non-cohesive soils, their relationship with the structure of the particles, types and soil conditions and their interdependence. The phenomenon of swelling and frost-heaving. compaction and compactibility soil, filtration, shear strength and compressibility in different stress systems, soil consolidation and preconsolidation phenomena, absolute and effective stress. The stresses distributions in the soil, pressure and resist phenomena. Slope stability in cohesive and non-cohesive soils. Geotechnical research methods, methods of dimensioning of direct and indirect foundations, piles, design methods using bearing capacity limit state method and displacement, engineering wells.Types and designing of excavation stability, drainage systems, retaining walls, gravity wall, piling wall, strengthening the soil and foundations, technologies of DSM and Jet -Grouting, soil substrate interaction

Assessment methods: passing 5 reports of the exercises, 4 tests, written exam. The final evaluation consists of 50 % of exercise score and 50% of lectures score
