Learning outcomes: Knowledge: Student: W1 – knows diagnostics features and taxonomic position in a world of living organisms of cyanobacteria and algae; representatives of embriophytes (liverworts, mosses, hornworts); vascular plants (lycophytes, equisetophytes, pterophytes) and lignophytes (progymnospermae and seed plants (gymnosperms and angiosperms) [KB_W 06, KB_W08, KB_W 12]; W2 – understands their significance for the nature and human and perceives the possibility of their reasonable practical application [KB_W18]; W3 – knows and understands main pathways of plants development and phylogenesis, especially of embriophytes, vascular plants and lignophytes (progymnospermae and seed plants (gymnosperms and angiosperms) [KB_W08, KB_W11]; W4 – distinguishes and selects suitable techniques of iconographic or herbarium documentation of identifies species, knows methods of preservation and description of herbarium collections [KB_W17]. Skills: Student: U1 – proficiently uses microscopes and stereomicroscope, is able to use basic stains in determination of prokaryotes and algae [KB_U 06]; U2 – can read, describe the features and interpret properties of organisms based on their position in taxonomic hierarchy of suitable classification system [KB_U06, KB_U10]; U3 – based on morphological features using suitable atlases and guidebooks (clues) can identify taxa of cyanobacteria, algae and gymnosperms and angiosperms plants [KB_U10]; U4 – is able to conduct species description in the field and determine quantitative contribution for characteristics of the state of plant communities [KB_U10]; U5 – can perform an analysis of natural valorization of an environment and conduct constant monitoring of plant species [KB_U05, KB_U10].

Competences: Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): Student: K1 – is aware of biodiversity significance and necessity of its protection [KB_K04, KB_K05]; K2 - knowingly and with an engagement propagates and supports ideas allowing maintenance of its natural character [KB_K06]; K3 – is able to work in a team, especially in difficult field conditions [KB_K09]; K4 – willingly cooperates in the range of nature protection with suitable institutions dealing with nature protection – Landscape Parks, National Parks, services leading constant environment monitoring [KB_K05].

Prerequisites: Plant morphology

Course content: The role and tasks of systematic; contemporary rules of botanic terminology; characteristic of different classification systems; systematic review of main development lines of prokaryotes (archeony, cyanobacterias) and eukaryotes (algae). The origins and main development trends of terrestrial plants. Systematic review and characteristics of taxa with the phylogenesis in evolutional lines of more important groups of prokaryotes (cyanobacteria); algae; embriophytes (liverworts, mosses, hornworts); vascular plants - pteridiophyta (lycophytes, equisetophytes, pterophytes) lignophytes (progymnospermae and seed plants (gymnosperms and angiosperms).

Assessment methods: Classes passing: systematic (1 -2 times a month) written valuation tests and oral statements with a mark. Presence on the classes is obligatory; student can have only one unjustified absence. In case of justified absence the student is obliged to score a suitable part of material. Classes passing based on mean of marks. Course passing: students with classes passed are obliged to obligatory written exam (open and test questions) during an exam session.
