Learning outcomes: The students develop a comprehension of how essential physiological processes contribute to the plant cell and the whole plant functioning. They define basic physiological terminology.The students are able to analyze the physiological and molecular mechanisms involved in functioning of the plant cell. They are able perform basic laboratory experiments independently, whilst remaining supervised by instructor.

Competences: The students demonstrate a high degree of initiative and independence, organizing and conducting teamwork. They show high capacity in the process of learning, and as essentially, in building personal contacts with associates across the group. The students understand the importance of training and self-cultivation. They comply with health and safety regulations in the laboratory and feel responsible for the equipment.

Prerequisites: Chemistry, Botany, Biochemistry

Course content: Physiological processes functioning at the molecular and the whole-organism level of plants. Water relations. Photosynthesis. The C3, C4 and CAM plants. The close and distant transport of assimilates. The plant growth regulators. Plant responses to the biotic and abiotic environmental factors.

Assessment methods: Knowledge: passing the theoretical test with the choice and open-ended questions. Skills: completion of the full laboratory training with assessment of the student skills in performing basic laboratory experiments and application of this expertise for estimation of the physiological processes in plant. Social competences: submission of the complete reports from the laboratory experiments by student, with these being critically reviewed for the quality of the result interpretation.
