Learning outcomes: Knowledge: The student has a basic knowledge in the field of genetics, methods of plant breeding and plant biotechnology. The student knows the methods of creative breeding, used to obtain varieties resistant to pests and pathogens and tolerant to abiotic stresses. The student has knowledge about biodiversity of the natural environment, its formation and protection against adverse abiotic and biotic factors. The student knows the possibilities of using biotechnological methods, including genetic transformations in plant breeding for resistance. The student knows the effects of positive and negative impacts of GMOs on the environment. Skills: The student is able to acquire and properly interpret the information from literature and other sources relating to plant breeding and biotechnology and to present issues related to this subject. The student can analyze the usefulness of agro biotechnology methods in agricultural production and their impact on the natural and environmental agriculture. The student knows and respects the rules of safety of genetic laboratory.

Competences: Personal and social competences: The student understands the need to cooperate in a group, in order to solve the problem in the field of plant breeding and biotechnology.The student can see the problems connected with breeding for resistance and biotechnology in relation to crop production.The student understands the need to care about the quality and condition of given equipment and understands and respects the principles of health and safety. The student is aware of the responsibility for the state of environment and diversity of plants.

Prerequisites: Entomology, pathology, genetics, plant breeding

Course content: The importance of breeding for resistance in agricultural and natural environmental protection. The rules of pathogenicity inheritance in microorganisms and resistance genes of hosts. Theories explaining the types of resistance. Inheritance of resistance to environmental plant stresses. Methods of quality classification in the range of field susceptibility of plants to infection and evaluation of damage caused by various diseases, pests and environmental factors. Reasons for the loss of stability in agroecosystems and change the duration of immunity in varieties in relation to certain pests and pathogens. Modern methods of breeding for resistance using biotechnology. Ecological importance of healthy, not infected varieties in feeding people and animals and the risk of mycotoxin food products derived from infected plants.

Assessment methods: Knowledge: Credit based on written paper covering selected contents of lecture. Minimum knowledge to pass 60%. Skills: Assessment of written paper by student. Social competences: Individually work and in groups, attitude to exercise.
