Learning outcomes: Student knows main strength properties of major constructional materials used in civil engineering, knows elastic and plastic behavior of investigated building elements and materials, knows forms of fracture and stability loss of investigated building elements and materials. Student knows basic methods and techniques used in laboratory tests of building elements and materials.. Skills Student is able to investigate strength properties of building materials and elements, basing on standards and technical manuals, is able to compile and analyze results of measurements. Student is able to calculate theoretical values of investigated properties, according to technical standards and literature, is able to compare results of theoretical calculations with results of measurements.

Competences: Student is aware of the need of use of materials with specific technical parameters and understands consequences of non-fulfillment of those parameters. Student is aware of the profits resulting from group work and is able to perform different functions in group.

Prerequisites: strength of materials

Course content: Investigations of basic strength characteristics of building materials. Investigations of bearing capacity of structural members and connections Techniques of investigation of mechanical properties of metals: tensile testing of metallic materials, measurements of elasticity modulus and yield stress. Elastic lateral buckling of compressed members: lateral buckling test, measurement of the critical buckling load. Measurements of deflection and lateral torsional buckling of steel beam. Investigation of load-bearing capacity of steel joints. Measurements of deformations and elasticity modulus of concrete. Measurements of deflections, crack width and spacing and load-bearing capacity of concrete reinforced beam. Bearing capacity of timber to timber nailed connection
