Learning outcomes: After course completion In area of knowledge Student knows the backgrounds of systematics and classification of selected groups of Protista and of invertebrate animals, knows their origin, structure, biology and importance; describes the external and internal morphology of animals; understands the increasing complexity of animal structure, resulting from the sequence ofevolutionary events; possesses the general knowledge of life functions of representatives of the kingdomsProtista and Animalia and of relations between the different groups of heterotrophs; knows the phylogenetic relationships between the major taxa of Animalia. In area of skills: Student operates the light– and stereomicroscopes; safely deals with the preserved material (invertebrate animals); identifies the representatives of particular classes of animals and – in case of native fauna – the representatives of orders (or lower taxonomic categories, as far as protected taxa and taxa of economic importance are concerned); applies the interactive keys in taxa identification; can select the adequate study techniques (methods of collecting, preservation, dissection, observation and identification) applied in relation to various groups of organisms.

Competences: In area of social competences: Student understands the increasing complexity of animal architecture, being in concordance with the evolutionary process, correctly identifies and solves the problems related to animal breeding; is aware of the collective responsibility for fulfilling the tasks assigned to the team; takes care for the equipment he/she was entrusted with; takes responsibility for animal safety and protection.

Course content: General characteristics of unicellular organisms (Protista) a General characteristics of unicellular organisms (Protista) and of animals (Animalia), origin of animals, living environment; basics of classification, systematics and phylogeny; structure and functions of heterotrophic organisms; life cycles; ontogeny and phylogeny; origin of major groups of Metazoa; systematic review; methods of collecting of animals; review of the Polish fauna, regulations concerning the animal protection in Poland.nd of animals (Animalia), origin of animals, living environment; basics of classification, systematics and phylogeny; structure and functions of heterotrophic organisms; life cycles; ontogeny and phylogeny; origin of major groups of Metazoa; systematic review; methods of collecting of animals; review of the Polish fauna, regulations concerning the animal protection in Poland.

Assessment methods: Positive grade obtained from tutorials is mandatory to write exam. Exam comprise both test and open questions and takes 90 min.

Comment:
