Name: ESSENTIAL BIOCHEMISTRY
Major: Biology
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 3
ECTS points: 5
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 30 / 30 / 0
Lecturer: prof. dr hab. Maciej Ugorski
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: At the end of the course student knows the chemical structure of basic compounds of animal organism and their functions, with special emphasis on catalytic and regulatory functions, and mechanisms of the energy and information transfer. The course provides some practical training in basic laboratory procedures; also the knowledge and terminology necessary to understand subsequent courses in molecular biology, physiology, genetics, microbiology etc.

Competences: The completed course provides student with minimum set of skills and knowledge for work in the analytical or diagnostic laboratories, and to do research in the field of basic biology.

Prerequisites: general and organic chemistry, biophysics

Course content: Chemical structure of the basic compounds of animal organism, selected topics of enzymology, basic metabolic pathways (mitochondrial respiratory chain and oxidative phosphorylation, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, metabolism of aminoacids, porphyrins and nucleotides) and their regulatory mechanisms.

Recommended literature: Biochemia, J.M. Berg, J.L. Tymoczko, L. Stryer, PWN, Warszawa, 2005 Ćwiczenia z biochemii, red. L. Kłyszejko-Stefanowicz, PWN, Warszawa, 1999 Biochemia Harpera, R.K.
