Learning outcomes: Knowledge Student: knows the currently used methods of cell culture, trends and perspectives in tissue engineering related to regeneration of tissues and organs. Skills Student: is able to assess the morphology of stem cells and growth pattern of in vitro culture using an inverted light microscopy; is able to calculate the number of cells using a Bruker chamber; is able to analyze the data obtained in the cytotoxic test; is able to plan an experiment concerning biomaterials modification and/or modifications of culture conditions for stem cells propagated on various biomaterials.

Competences: Student: is responsible for cell cultures and works in group; applies the principles of aseptic and safe work.

Prerequisites: -

Course content: The course contents will discuss current approaches and perspectives of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The leading subject will be stem cells and tissue regeneration. The emphasized topics will concern regeneration of bone, cartilage and nervous system. The course will present modern biomaterials, scaffolds and matrices used in cell culture and tissue engineering. Moreover the course will provide information about methods used for assessment of biomaterials biocompatibility.

Assessment methods: In order to pass the course student must have (i) high attendance at practical classes; (ii) positive marks from practical test and (iii) positive mark from the final exam. Attendance at practical classes:laboratory classes include a series of ten classes (2 hours each), attendance is obligatory. Student may have one absence, provided that it will be excuse by relevant documents Final grade is calculated as an average from final marks obtained during practical course and obtained from theoretical test. The requirement of taking part in theoretical test is positive mark from practical classes and attendance during exercises (minimum 9 for 10 classes). Theoretical test will include from problem and closed questions. In order to pass the test student must have 60% correct answers, both from open and closed questions.
