Learning outcomes: (S)he knows the basic technical and environmental principles, codes and standards for the designing of structures and structural elements in civil engineering. (S)he knows the principles for construction and dimensioning of structures and structural elements –made of ferroconcrete, water impounding structures, and principles of their operation. (S)he knows the principles for the construction and analysis of selected structures in water engineering and hydrotechnics. Skills (S)he can calculate the dimensions of basic structural elements in water engineering, transport and hydrotechnical structures. (S)he can design selected elements and simple structures, (s)he can estimate physical and mechanical properties of soils used as a material for earthworks. (S)he can read architectural, construction, geological and geodetic drawings and prepare graphic documentation in the environment of selected CAD software.

Competences: The student can solve specific problems independently as well as a team member.

Prerequisites: geology, soil mechanics

Course content: Types of hydrotechnical structures, the principles for their location and operation. Principles for the design and construction of hydrotechnical structures. Potential risk areas. Materials that may be used to create specific elements. Construction security state, filtration below the dam and its stability. After the course the student possesses theoretically-based and well-organised general and specific knowledge covering the main issues related to hydrotechnical earth structures. The student knows basic technological, environmental and economic conditions for the location of hydrotechnical structures and possesses general knowledge concerning the problems connected with the realisation of such structures. The student is familiar with the methods of decision-making for the purposes of needs analysis and feasibility study of the given structure; (s)he knows the types of water impounding structures and the principles of their operation, design and construction, places of potential risk; can assess the soil foundation of the dam or embankment; he can assess the soil from which various elements of the structure will be constructed; can determine the safety state of the structure. The student can design a hydrotechnical structure as a structure composed of interacting elements. (S)he knows how to calculate filtration through the substrate and body of the dam and how to assess the stability of the construction; he can assess the physical and mechanical properties of soil for the possibility of their incorporation into various elements of the structure; he can determine the class of the various hydraulic structures; can design necessary seal and strengthening; knows the principles of drainage design and can properly deploy control and measurement devices.
