Study Semester: 1
ECTS points: 4
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 15 / 30 / 0
Lecturer: dr Krzysztof Marycz
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: Students obtain theoretical knowledge of microscopes technique, histochemical and cytochemical techniques together with practical skills of performing particular procedures, as well as, interpreting theirs results. Additionally, students learn how to plane biological experiments involving microscopes technique using different type of microscopes.

Competences: The course allows students for independent choice of different type of microscopes and methodology for planning biological experiment for their bachelor and master thesis. After course completion students posses skills enabling them to work in institutions dealing with biological tests using different type of microscopes.

Prerequisites: cell biology, histology, anatomy

Course content: Transmission and scanning electron microscope. Types of microscope, optical system, light techniques. Types of microscopy slides. Staining and fixed model. Cytochemical and histochemical reaction. In situ hybrydyzation. Confocal microscopy. Numeral analysis of slides.

Recommended literature: Groniowski, J. Biczykowa, W. Komitowski, D. (1973) Atlas patologii mikroskopowej. Wydawnictwo lekarskie PZWL. Hakat M, A. (1974) Principles and Techniques of Electron Microscopy. The Jones and Bartlett Series in Biology. Pluta M., (1982) Mikroskopia Optyczna. PaƄstwowe Wydawnictwo Naukowe.

Assessment methods: Completion of the practical training part is based on grades, which are granted during the semester (oral and written tests and final exam); minimum 60% of knowledge to pass.
