Learning outcomes: Knowledge: W1 – knows basic animal tissues [BI2_W04_TP]; W2 – knows histological differences of animal tissues [BI2_W04_TP]; W3 – knows basic animal tissue staining protocols [BI2_W05_TP]; W4 – knows methodology of light microscopy [BI_W05_TP]. Skills: U1 – is able to use light microscope [BI2_U05]; U2 – is able to choose the most suitable research methods [BI2_U06]; U3 – is able to prepare the proper background for light and electron microscopy [BI2_U05; BI2_U06]; U4 – is able to interpret obtained results and to present them [BI2_U12]. Personal and social competences (attitudes and behaviors): K1 – is responsible for planing tasks and choosing methods for animal tissue visualization [BI2_K03]; K2– shows ethical attitudes for experimental animals [BI2_K08]; K3 – shows responsibility for entrusted preparations and microscopes [BI2_K02; BI2_K03]; K4 – is conscious of importance of working in compliance with safety and health rules and keeps rudiments of aseptic working [BI2- _K06].

Competences: Passing the course permits working in laboratories where the organic and inorganic matter is analyze by means of electron and light microscopy.

Prerequisites: histology, cell biology

Course content: Transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Types of light microscopes. Types of microscopy preparations. Fixation and staining techniques. Autoradiography. Types of cyto- and histochemical reactions. In situ hybridization. Fluorescence microscopy. Hardware and software picture analysis tools.
