Course code: NBSS20156o10
Semester: 2010/2011 summer
Name: Structure Modification of Organic Compounds
Major: Biotechnology
Study Type: second cycle
Course type: compulsory
Study Semester: 1
ECTS points: 10
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 45 / 60 / 0
Lecturer: dr hab. Teresa Kołek prof. nadzw.
Language of instruction: Polish

Learning outcomes: On completion of the course the students know the synthetic possibilities which offer biotransformation techniques in production of drug and food additives, as well as environmentally friendly cosmetics and detergents and the perspectives concerning bioremediation of polluted areas. Students are familiar with isolation techniques of organic compounds. Students can predict the most important spectral properties of chemical substances. Students can predict the correct or most probable structure from experimental data.

Competences: Student knows how to use plant cells and enzymes in form of acetone powder to perform a biotransformation process, and is able to isolate products using column chromatography and interpret their IR and 1H NMR spectra. Students are able to isolate the organic compounds, select the most appropriate solution for a given analytical problem and evaluate the results of the analysis.

Prerequisites: Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Basics of biotransformation.

Course content: The knowledge concerning the use of enzymatic systems which result in modifications of the structure of natural substrates (carbohydrates, proteins, isoprenoids, antibiotics). Enzymatic carbon-carbon bond formation, ‘green chemistry” – enzymes in the synthesis of the biodegradable surfactants. Bioremediation as the useful tool of degradation of persistent pollutants. The course also provides the insight into genetic improvements of microorganisms. Isolation of natural compounds and methods of determination of their molecular weight. The application of chiral-optical methods (ORD, CD) for determination of configuration of chiral centers of optically active components. The basis of mass spectrometry, IR and UV and the application of these methods for the functional groups identification.

Assessment methods: Passing grades of laboratory course and written exam, the minimal level of knowledge required to pass the course is 60%.
