Semester: 2017/2018 winter
Name: Drainage of Structures
Major: Civil Engineering
Study Type: first cycle
Course type: optional
Study Semester: 5
ECTS points: 4
Hours (Lectures / Tutorials / Other): 30 / 30 / 0
Lecturer: dr hab. inż. Krzysztof Parylak, dr inż. Zofia Zięba
Language of instruction: English
The course taught in English. Contact person: dr inż. Zofia Zięba

Learning outcomes: Knowledge Student after completing the course acquires knowledge on horizontal and vertical drainage system application according to particular geotechnical conditions. Student becomes knowledgeable about hydrological modeling of water movement into the side horizontal and vertical drains in both perched and tense water table conditions. Student also knows drainage system elements and methods of its design and construction. Skills Student knows how to design and execute drainage system and is able to recognize appropriate filter cover due to the soil type. Student acquires knowledge on constructing shallow and deep drainage systems and their elements, as well as student is able to define specifications of applied drainage system.

Competences: Student understands importance of urban drainage system and is aware of the serious damage caused by an inappropriate drainage of structures.

Prerequisites: soil mechanics, hydrogeology, hydraulics.

Course content: Flooding causes. Drainage systems classification and their elements. Surface drainage systems. Subsurface drainage systems. Horizontal drainage systems. Vertical drainage systems. Numerical model for different types of drainage system in both perched and tense water table conditions. Drainpipes types and their construction. Soil filters design. Geotextile.
